About Soul & Saar: a place to think clearly about work, money and the decisions that shape both — through books, counsel and a small membership for people running real things.
About Soul & Saar — Saar means essence — what is left when everything decorative has been stripped away. That is the whole intention.
We work with people on the things that sit underneath their work and their life — through counsel, readings, writing and the occasional object worth owning. Different doors, one idea behind all of them: the clearer you are about yourself, the better every other decision gets.
For most people, work is only half of it. The other half is the marriage that has gone quiet, the parent you keep meaning to call, the child growing up in the gaps between your meetings, the friendships that thinned while you were busy. We take that half as seriously as the first.
We work with founders and employees, men and women, people running companies and people still deciding what to build. The questions turn out to be remarkably similar.
Why we started
There was a gap on the shelf.
There is no shortage of business writing. Frameworks, playbooks, tactics, growth. Most of it is competent and most of it assumes you are a rational actor who simply lacks information.
And there is no shortage of writing about meaning — peace, presence, letting go. Most of it is written for people with an unusual amount of time, and it tends to treat ambition as something to be recovered from.
Very little sits between the two. Almost nothing is made for the person who is genuinely building something, who wants it badly, and who also suspects that the way they are going about it is costing more than it should.
Soul & Saar was started for that person — and it turns out that person is everywhere. A founder in London. A doctor in New York. Someone three years into a job they are good at and quietly tired of. Someone whose company is doing well and whose marriage is not.

Six things we keep coming back to
01 Fear is the expensive part
Most bad decisions are not information failures. They are made by someone protecting themselves. Remove the fear and the same person, with the same facts, decides differently.
02 Detachment is a performance advantage
Not a retreat from ambition. Gripping the outcome makes you rigid, needy and defensive. You can work at full intensity without your identity riding on the result.
03 Contribution compounds, extraction does not
Taking more than you give works reliably in the short term. Then acquisition costs rise every year and the reputation quietly degrades.
04 How you treat people who cannot help you is the tell
Everyone performs well upward. If you want to know what someone is like to work with, watch how they speak to people who cannot answer back.
05 Presence is most of what people actually want from you
Not provision, and not intention. The people closest to you cannot see your plan to be more available next quarter. They can only see whether you are in the room.
06 The good year is the dangerous one
The bad year takes care of itself — you watch every expense. It is relief that makes people careless, and those decisions get explained for a decade.

Where the thinking comes from?
Some of it is ordinary experience — fifteen years of building companies across three countries, including one that failed completely.
Some of it is older. There is a body of thought, several thousand years old, about acting fully while holding the result loosely, about work as practice rather than transaction, about ambition without self-obsession. We draw on it the way you might draw on Stoicism: as a tool for thinking, not a belief system you are asked to adopt.
You do not need to be spiritual or religious to use anything we publish. Many of our readers are not. Take the idea and leave the rest.
